using and usability of kolibri
-
Do any of you use Kolbiri as a "full time" operating system, meaning that you don't rely on any other OS? Is this possible to do with ease? Or is Kolibri simply used for intellectual stimulation?
1) KOS can't compete with "full-bodied" office/workstation OSes now.Jake wrote:Do any of you use Kolbiri as a "full time" operating system, meaning that you don't rely on any other OS? Is this possible to do with ease? Or is Kolibri simply used for intellectual stimulation?
2) Dosens of important system features yet need to be implemented to make such competition possible. People say it might take years of steady work (and a good chunk of money): huge parts of existing code should be completely rewritten from scratch.
3) However other guis dare to use this minimalistic OS now for wide range of time- and resource-critical applications:
- control of instruments, technology processes and scientific experiments,
- fast numeric computations (to use almost 100% of CPU power),
- fast data acquisition stations (to use almost 100% of system bus bandwidth),
- cheap intranet stations and terminals,
- new hardware testing units,
- digital audio players
and so on.
Whether you qualify those systems as "full time" OSes or just as "intellectual stimulation" - it's up to you.
I only listed few examples of areas where KOS can work with (theoretically) higher efficiency than most "grown-up" OSes.
