Eh, I tried Kolibri a few months ago and never posted this. I had a similar problem with MenuetOS before it. post on their forums
Booting from Grub using memdisk from syslinux 3.84 now. Tried at 800x600 and 1024x768. The difference between Kolibri and MenuetOS is I don't even get any cursor movement on Kolibri, while on MenuetOS I get what looks like the small corner of a cursor.
Specs:
AMD Athlon64 3200+
MSI K8N Neo Platinum (nforce3)
MSI FX5200
NVidia GeForce FX5200
Are there any messages or just empty black desktop?
What about the latest development version http://diamond.kolibrios.org/nightbuild/ ?

Also, what choice for "[d] Load image from:" do you use? For grub+memdisk it must be 1, "use real floppy".
No messages. Just black. And with kolibri, no cursor movement either.
Just tried the nightly, same thing.
And I do use option load image from real floppy. I also tried VRR on and off, since my monitor is connected via dsub.

I think a problem not in video - I had a computer with Duron 950 and Nvidia FX5200 - everything worked fine. This videoсard support Vesa well.
You can check up it having started, if at you is Windows:
vesa3.zip
Or using Vesa driver in Linux.
Probably problem in Grub or in something else.

Well, I know for a fact, my monitor does not support standard vesa timings well at all, and I haven't felt like lugging any of my old crts out of the basement. The thing is, generally, if it were out of range, the monitor would go into standby. This monitor, though, for one, it does not have an edid. Any attempt by drivers to read it will always fail. In X11, I must specify modelines, refresh rates, and displaysize manually, or I'll be stuck at 640x480 with an off center screen. If I want a decent framebuffer in linux, I have to add my custom timings into the kernel's modedb.c file so I can use nvidiafb. Vesafb sort of works at 1024x768, but it's a bit off center by about a 5 millimeters to the left. And now that I think about it, even the freakin BIOS are off center. Does there happen to be a way to specify mode timings for kolibri to use?
I just ordered a new monitor yesterday, though, thank goodness, so I'll see what happens with it.

Sorry, but these settings for Vesa does not exist.slightlystoopid wrote:Does there happen to be a way to specify mode timings for kolibri to use?
fair enough. still odd that it's just a black screen though as opposed to just being off center as usual. also, it's strange that in menuetos, I'd have cursor movement. of course, I wouldn't actually see a cursor, just a few white pixels.
If the system is booting normally and the only problem is displaying data, then Ctrl+Alt+F12 and then Enter should reboot the computer (and End instead of Enter should turn it off). Otherwise, there is a chance that the system just encounters some problem before displaying anything.
no, Ctrl+Alt+F12 then Enter does nothing. I did manage to get Kolibri to boot from my usb drive, however. Do you think kolibri (or possibly memdisk?) has a problem reading ext4? I can't find any mention of this.
Ext4 is not supported. Recently it has been written the support for reading Ext2/Ext3, but it all is not yet stable.
