Trying out the latest - video problem

Post here questions, problems and suggestions in English language
  • Like most intel cards, yours is probably not VESA compatible.

Just to make sure, some questions:
    - Are any modes other then 640*480*16 and 320*240*256 listed ?
    - If so, what happens when you select one of those modes ?
    - Did you try to disable VRR ?

    welcome to the forums btw

    no..just those two.

    It was disabled already.

    welcome to the forums btw

    Thanks very much.

    I was hoping for a solution...oh well....

I'm afraid there is no readily available solution.

Try running this program on your computer http://www.mikedld.com/.old/f/vesa3.zip (it runs on dos)
If this program shows more videomodes then in KolibriOS, then there is probably a bug in KolibriOS kernel.
If not, you need a special driver for your card, wich doesnt exist yet.

You could also try to find another graphics card, or test KolibriOS on another computer

    Good luck

OK then which video cards are supported in KolibriOS ? I was going to add a card to this machine anyway...might as well get one
    which supports it :)

    Thanks

You forgot to add that Kolibri support for Vesa mode only with the depth of color 24b and 32b, as well as the sizes are not more than 1280 * 1024.

    beacon@videotron.ca
Video cards working with Vesa 2.0 are well enough supported. To check support to you it is necessary to start the offered utility.
Also some ATI video cards have support of the hardware cursor.

Well 1280x1024 would be a big improvement here...even though my Linux runs at 1650x1080 :)

If that utility runs in DOS only that's a problem for me...I'll have to find another way.
ATI cards are also problematic in Linux..maybe I'll try an NVidia card ?

    Thanks

The utility works in WinXP and MSDOS, naturally with Linux it's not working.

You do not understand me - no matter who is manufacturer of the video card, it is important to maintain the standard Vesa 2.0 or higher. Run the utility and you will see.

Run the utility and you will see.

But that's the problem - the only OS on this machine is two versions of Linux.

Anyway I already know that the Intel video is not Vesa 2.0 compatible...hope to find a card which is AND which is well supported under Linux.

    Thanks
  • Most modern video cards are VESA 2.0 compatible, just not all intel one's :P
You could create a booteable floppy or CD with dos + the utility i linked too (freedos will do fine http://www.freedos.org/)

  • That's what I'll do...apparently there is something called Balder which is sort of single disc FreeDos ?? Anyway I'll check it out when I have a moment ( too bad I don't have a working floppy drive) :)

    Thanks

Well I have since discovered that my chipset IS vesa 2.0 compatible.

Where do I go from here ?

    Answering my own question :)

I increased the frame buffer size in the BIOS to 256 and now get 1024x768 @more colors!!!

    Much better

When can we expect another kernel ?

    What do you mean?
All sources are placed in the SVN repository.
All the latest updates, you can get here http://kolibrios.org/?p=Download&lang=en

Also, you do not have to use the BIOS to 256 Mb of memory for video, 8 Mb is enough to establish any mode supported in the Kolibri.

Well I was thinking more along the lines of an official release...but I will check out SVN for now.

The ONLY way I can get more than 640x480 in 256 is to bump up the BIOS to 256 megs....I tried that after I found out my Intel video was Vesa compatible.

    Thanks for the link anyway...
