I want to do two things, play mp3 audio and play xvid (avi) sometimes with aac audio
Will KolibriOS cater for these two needs?

Yes.
For mp3, we have AC97SND music player, it's included in the main (IMG) distribution.
For movies you'll need FPLAY media player, it's only available on the CD (ISO) distribution.
