Are their criteria too strict as to who they accept?

Formal reason is "We had many more applications than available slots".
Actual reason is unknown.

Как минимум FTP клиент достойная вещь.

Если тебе не нравится GSoC, то это не он плох, а мы не смогли в достаточной мере организовать проекты и работу студентов.

ну что ж, для оттачивания организаторских навыков - да, неплохая практика.

а вот насчет реального вклада в разработку...
- не то чтобы у меня было какое-то предубеждение против Google,
но чего-то подобного можно было ожидать с самого начала.
