Bizzare behaviour and crashes on high resolutions

Problem: when big enough resolution chosen at boot, kernel crashes before the desktop. 100% replicable with 2560x1600 32bpp.
On resolutions between 1920x1080 and 2560x1600 it tries to boot, comes to desktop (and sometimes to dock and icons), but seems to get stuck somewhere and gets hung.
