Using Kolibri in embedded systems
  • Hi,

is it possible to get kolibrios on one of these devices?

    http://hackaday.com/2013/10/03/the-inte ... d-arduino/

    Would be cool!
  • Well, that's theoretically possible. Look at 86duino too: http://www.86duino.com/
These will require some work though.
  • Yes, as SoUrcerer said it should be possible, but financially it would make more sense to use a cheaper competitor product 86duino: http://shop.dmp.com.tw/INT/products/23 (it's just 39$, only 4$ more than Raspberry Pi).
  • But the cheaper product has less cpu power and less ram! A standard plattform would be nice!

Yes, it has less, but who needs more? I am using KolibriOS on similar CPU for 3 years now, and it works very fast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XnlA4ijrTBo
KolibriOS only uses 8MB RAM, so there is little difference between 128MB and 256MB RAM onboard, aside from higher price :-)
  • for video playback and better emulators :D

Current video playback in KolibriOS is awful even on much faster processors, but that is because KolibriOS uses VESA for video output. +100MHz won't change anything.
  • Video playback on the device which has no video card? Good luck with that :D

LOL you spoiled all the fun  Both boards (Galileo and 86duino) have miniPCIe card slot which can be used to install a video card

Yes but what firmware do the devices have? If they have no regular BIOS, there will be no VBE and no VESA, or am I mistaken?

Galileo uses Intel's flavor of TianoCore (OpenSource UEFI BIOS), so no idea about that one. 86duino uses Coreboot BIOS which has VBE/VESA modules (like SeaBIOS), so that should be only a matter of compiling their BIOS with correct modules added.
  • Maybe we should make a new kickstarter campaign to get a standard plattform for all of the kolibrios users and developers. Something like those hdmi sticks that have android on them. What do you think?

So we should ask people for money, and then do what exactly with it, develop our own hardware platform?

  • yes, that is what I meant! If we all use the same cheap hardware it would help both users and developers!

    Hardware might be:

    Intel based 32Bit CPU > 1GHz
    SVGA or HD compatible HDMI
    1-2 GB Ram
    maybe microsd as storage
    USB or Bluetooth keyboard/mouse
    (optional crypto chip)

cheap price and open hardware of course!
