KolibriOS Summer of Code 2013 student applications
Posted: Tue Jun 04, 2013 9:37 pm
Dear prospective KolibriOS Summer of Code 2013 students! Please post your student applications in this thread.
Make sure you read the rules before posting! Deadline for application submission is Thursday, June 13th, 24:00 UTC.
*** If you have questions, please ask them in our chat - there is always someone there to help! ***
After the deadline, our team members (together with people who pledged £100 or more to our Kickstarter campaign) will review all applications and select 2 (two) students from those who applied. Each of two selected students will receive a stipend of $2,250USD, paid in 3 monthly installments of $750USD.
1. Full Name (First + Last Name).
2. Age.
3. Country + city of residence.
4. Human languages you speak (write all languages and knowledge level - basic/intermediate/expert/mother tongue).
5. Name of college or university you are accepted into or enrolled in + link to their website.
6. Name of program (or faculty, or department) in that college/university you are accepted into or enrolled in.
7. Your current timezone in UTC/GMT terms (for example, Paris is UTC/GMT +2 hours right now).
8. Have you been involved with any open-source project in the past? If yes, which one, and what have you done for that project?
9. Code samples - please provide links to code that you have written (or attach to your application in the forum). It can be your high school project, contribution to open-source organization, your college/university task or anything like that.
10. The task you are willing to work on from our list of Summer of Code 2013 ideas (or suggest your own idea, if you don't like any of the proposed ideas).
11. Suggest or make a slight improvement to KolibriOS. You need to be specific, although it can be anything you want, for example:
a) You have found a bug in our kernel or in one of our drivers or applications - point us to this bug.
b) You have found a mistake on our website or in our Wiki - tell us how to correct it.
c) Improve one of our existing applications or write a new one.
To clarify, you don't have to do a+b+c, just one of them (your choice). Doing all 3 is a bonus
============================================================
Rules for the application:
1. Applications must be posted in English language only.
2. Only one post per student. If you want to change your post, then click Edit button and edit the existing post. You can do this as many times as you want before Thursday, June 13th, 24:00 UTC.
3. The Summer of Code is a full (day)time job. This means we expect roughly 40 hours per week on your project, during the three months of coding. Obviously we have flexibility, but if your schedule (exams, courses) does not give you this amount of spare time, then maybe you should not apply.
4. If you are not 18 years of age or older on or before June 14, 2013, then you will have to provide written and signed parents consent to work on our Summer of Code. Without that letter, we won't be able to accept you.
5. Residents and/or nationals of Iran, Syria, Cuba, Sudan, Côte d'Ivoire, Somalia, Congo (both), North Korea and Myanmar (Burma) are ineligible to participate. We are terribly sorry, but we cannot work with countries on which USA has imposed an embargo.
6. If you are selected, you will be also required to provide a valid e-mail address, phone number and one IM (instant messenger) handle (Skype, Gtalk/Jabber or similar). Make sure you have those available (do NOT post them now so that spambots don't catch them).
7. If you are selected, you will be also required to provide a scan of your passport and university/college enrollment or acceptance papers.
8. If you are selected, you will be required to work with our forums and our SVN server. Please make sure you are familiar with SVN use, and have possibility to access our SVN from your computer: svn://kolibrios.org
9. Selection process might require conducting an online interview via IM or our forum chat, at our discretion. Make sure you are proficient enough to answer our questions via IM/chat in real time.
10. Stipend will only be paid after a mentor has reviewed the student's progress for the previous month, and awarded a "pass" grade. Students that received "fail" would be required to either correct their code based on mentor's remarks prior to being paid, or face removal from the program without any stipend.
11. All code written by the student as part of KolibriOS Summer of Code, should be released under GPLv2+ or the new BSD license.
Applications violating any of the above rules will not be considered.
